[00:05:35] James Marland: Therapists and practice. And today, uh, we are gonna do a rapid fire episode on a recap
[00:05:42] James Marland: of the episodes with the downloads and the main
[00:05:45] James Marland: points. And I have the host of I have the host
[00:05:51] James Marland: and founder,
[00:05:52] James Marland: or well, the founder of, uh, the Cy Craft Network with, uh, me, Gordon Brewer. Hello, Gordon.
[00:05:58] Gordon Brewer: Hello James. Good to be here.
[00:06:01] James Marland: Glad that you are here. Uh, we talk about you frequently,
[00:06:06] James Marland: every other episode
[00:06:07] James Marland: we're mentioning how great the Side Craft Network is Uh,
[00:06:11] James Marland: and I just appreciate your, the what you bring to the community and your wisdom. And so we're gonna just get your
[00:06:17] James Marland: perspective
[00:06:18] James Marland: on, on the, uh, the episodes that we did.
[00:06:22] Gordon Brewer: Awesome. Awesome.
[00:06:24] James Marland: Uh, so, um. We're just gonna go, we're just gonna get right into it. Uh, we're gonna talk about the topic And
[00:06:32] James Marland: um, the download of the episode And some of the main points.
[00:06:36] James Marland: And I'll just be questioning Gordon on how it is going. So the first one, episode
[00:06:42] James Marland: 42. Was marketing your therapy services and being using SEO and getting your SEO
[00:06:49] James Marland: up to snuff. And our guest was
[00:06:51] James Marland: Daniel Fava,
[00:06:53] James Marland: and the download of
[00:06:55] James Marland: the episode was A SEO or getting started with SEO.
[00:06:59] James Marland: It's a
[00:06:59] James Marland: checklist for easy and high impact tasks you can do right now to improve
[00:07:04] James Marland: your rankings. um, and the, the main topics were finding time, 'cause we all we all talked about like, where do we find this time to do the
[00:07:13] James Marland: SEO and
[00:07:15] James Marland: how do you get noticed
[00:07:16] James Marland: on Google?
[00:07:17] James Marland: So Gordon, what's your experience
[00:07:19] James Marland: with uh, SEO?
[00:07:21] Gordon Brewer: Well, um, uh, to be quite honest, I, um,
[00:07:26] Gordon Brewer: I, I kind of stumbled upon
[00:07:29] Gordon Brewer: SEO and I probably did SEO on accident as my
[00:07:34] James Marland: I.
[00:07:34] Gordon Brewer: as my, my daughter used to say on accident,
[00:07:37] Gordon Brewer: um, instead
[00:07:38] Gordon Brewer: of by accident. But, um, anyway, um, one of the things that I, I've learned about it over the years is just making sure,
[00:07:47] Gordon Brewer: um, and people hear this from me all the time, just across the board as being consistent and persistent
[00:07:52] Gordon Brewer: with what you do online.
[00:07:55] Gordon Brewer: And
[00:07:55] Gordon Brewer: um, having
[00:07:56] Gordon Brewer: SEO
[00:07:56] Gordon Brewer: in the back, in, uh, in the back of your mind when you go to create stuff or create content
[00:08:02] Gordon Brewer: that you're gonna put up online. And just also thinking about it in terms of,
[00:08:08] Gordon Brewer: you know.
[00:08:10] Gordon Brewer: if,
[00:08:10] Gordon Brewer: if somebody goes to Google something, what are they
[00:08:12] Gordon Brewer: gonna type in? And so you wanna make sure, and that's a good way to think about keywords, is Just
[00:08:17] Gordon Brewer: think about what is it?
[00:08:19] Gordon Brewer: If somebody were searching
[00:08:20] Gordon Brewer: for something that was related to
[00:08:23] Gordon Brewer: a particular topic or a particular
[00:08:25] Gordon Brewer: niche or whatever,
[00:08:26] Gordon Brewer: is, think
[00:08:27] Gordon Brewer: about it
[00:08:27] Gordon Brewer: in terms of what would they type
[00:08:30] Gordon Brewer: in?
[00:08:30] Gordon Brewer: You know, what are they gonna be looking for And, and
[00:08:34] Gordon Brewer: I know we're gonna talk hit here a little bit later on niches,
[00:08:37] Gordon Brewer: uh, but that's one reason why,
[00:08:40] Gordon Brewer: um, having a niche is
[00:08:42] Gordon Brewer: important.
[00:08:42] Gordon Brewer: Because what I've learned over the years as far as a
[00:08:46] Gordon Brewer: pr being a practice owner is, is that when people are looking for help, they're looking for help with
[00:08:52] Gordon Brewer: a specific problem. and not just necessarily Googling counselors or whatever.
[00:08:58] James Marland: Oh,
[00:08:58] James Marland: okay.
[00:08:59] Gordon Brewer: looking, yeah, they're looking
[00:09:00] Gordon Brewer: for
[00:09:01] Gordon Brewer: oh, I'm,
[00:09:02] Gordon Brewer: I'm struggling in my marriage,
[00:09:03] Gordon Brewer: so I wanna find a marriage
[00:09:05] Gordon Brewer: counselor, or,
[00:09:06] Gordon Brewer: you know, I'm, I'm having trouble with depression or anxiety, those kinds of things. and So they will probably typically say anxiety
[00:09:14] Gordon Brewer: counselors are. Marriage counselors
[00:09:16] Gordon Brewer: or depression counselors, that sort of thing. So
[00:09:19] Gordon Brewer: I think it's good to
[00:09:20] Gordon Brewer: have that in the back of your mind when thinking about SEO. And I know probably knowing Daniel as I've known Daniel,
[00:09:28] Gordon Brewer: I'm sure he talked
[00:09:29] Gordon Brewer: about having, um, service specific
[00:09:32] Gordon Brewer: pages on your website. Um,
[00:09:35] Gordon Brewer: as far as,
[00:09:36] James Marland: What is a service specific page?
[00:09:39] Gordon Brewer: yeah. So, um,
[00:09:41] Gordon Brewer: So I'll just use anxiety as an example. If you,
[00:09:44] Gordon Brewer: if you specialize in
[00:09:46] Gordon Brewer: anxiety
[00:09:47] Gordon Brewer: or treating anxiety,
[00:09:50] Gordon Brewer: you want to have, um,
[00:09:52] Gordon Brewer: a
[00:09:52] Gordon Brewer: specific page about how you treat anxiety.
[00:09:56] Gordon Brewer: I. And what are
[00:09:57] Gordon Brewer: some things about anxiety? And
[00:09:59] Gordon Brewer: then same
[00:10:00] Gordon Brewer: thing for like
[00:10:00] Gordon Brewer: depression or, you know, somebody's, uh, does like OCD or,
[00:10:05] Gordon Brewer: grief
[00:10:06] Gordon Brewer: or marriage therapy or, you know, uh, eating disorders or
[00:10:10] Gordon Brewer: just any of the
[00:10:11] Gordon Brewer: any of
[00:10:12] Gordon Brewer: the niches that
[00:10:12] Gordon Brewer: you can think of
[00:10:14] Gordon Brewer: is having a a page devoted to that particular issue
[00:10:18] Gordon Brewer: that people can, um, when they search, that'll help boost
[00:10:22] Gordon Brewer: it up in the, in the rankings.
[00:10:24] James Marland: Yeah, that, that makes sense. And I do remember, I believe he was talking about that, but I've been to
[00:10:29] James Marland: webpages where you click
[00:10:30] James Marland: service, like adult services and it just drops a, uh, a dropdown
[00:10:34] James Marland: box. It's like, Oh, we do depression And we do anxiety, and we do marriage. But it doesn't have a specific page about that And I, I think what you're saying is if you don't have that specific page, you, uh, Google doesn't see it, or
[00:10:47] James Marland: it's, it, sees it, but it doesn't, you know, it's not.
[00:10:49] Gordon Brewer: Yeah.
[00:10:50] James Marland: Bubbling up or coming up to the surface
[00:10:52] James Marland: of the ranking.
[00:10:53] Gordon Brewer: Yeah.
[00:10:54] James Marland: So having those
[00:10:55] James Marland: individual pages and
[00:10:57] Gordon Brewer: Right. And, you know. Right. And the, the other thing too
[00:11:01] Gordon Brewer: is, is you
[00:11:02] Gordon Brewer: want,
[00:11:02] Gordon Brewer: you know, your SEO,
[00:11:04] Gordon Brewer: another
[00:11:04] Gordon Brewer: way to think about it too is you're establishing
[00:11:07] Gordon Brewer: yourself
[00:11:07] Gordon Brewer: as an expert. and
[00:11:09] Gordon Brewer: so when the search engines go to look for it, they want to be able to see.
[00:11:14] Gordon Brewer: Um, okay. They know about this
[00:11:16] Gordon Brewer: topic, but they also
[00:11:18] Gordon Brewer: referenced it to somebody else
[00:11:19] Gordon Brewer: that's an expert.
[00:11:21] Gordon Brewer: So that's outbound
[00:11:22] Gordon Brewer: links.
[00:11:23] Gordon Brewer: and then you want to have
[00:11:24] Gordon Brewer: also,
[00:11:25] Gordon Brewer: um,
[00:11:25] Gordon Brewer: as much as you can
[00:11:26] Gordon Brewer: inbound
[00:11:27] Gordon Brewer: links so you
[00:11:28] Gordon Brewer: know other people referencing you. And that's where directories, things like Psychology Today and,
[00:11:34] Gordon Brewer: um, You know, therapy, Dan, those kinds of
[00:11:38] Gordon Brewer: directories are helpful and that they're
[00:11:39] Gordon Brewer: referring back to you. So you've got, uh, you know, again,
[00:11:43] Gordon Brewer: thinking about the
[00:11:45] Gordon Brewer: internet as the worldwide web,
[00:11:46] Gordon Brewer: the more strands of the web you have
[00:11:49] Gordon Brewer: coming in and out of your website, the better
[00:11:51] Gordon Brewer: you're gonna rank.
[00:11:53] James Marland: Okay, great. The next episode, episode 43,
[00:11:56] James Marland: was uh, marketing your therapy services with lead
[00:12:00] James Marland: magnets. And the download of that
[00:12:02] James Marland: episode. was plan your first lead magnet worksheet.
[00:12:05] James Marland: And one of the main points of that was the power
[00:12:09] James Marland: of lead magnets. So, Gordon,
[00:12:12] Gordon Brewer: Mm-Hmm.
[00:12:12] James Marland: you have lead magnets and what are what? How do you use
[00:12:15] James Marland: them?
[00:12:16] Gordon Brewer: Yes.
[00:12:17] Gordon Brewer: So one, one of the things maybe to kind of explain to people about lead
[00:12:22] Gordon Brewer: magnets.
[00:12:23] Gordon Brewer: Lead magnets are the number one tool that you
[00:12:27] Gordon Brewer: need to build an email list. And I know, I don't know if you
[00:12:30] Gordon Brewer: covered
[00:12:31] Gordon Brewer: that
[00:12:32] Gordon Brewer: any in any
[00:12:32] Gordon Brewer: of The
[00:12:33] Gordon Brewer: episodes,
[00:12:33] Gordon Brewer: but you know.
[00:12:36] Gordon Brewer: Um, particularly through, you know, I've learned this
[00:12:38] Gordon Brewer: through podcasting, you can,
[00:12:40] Gordon Brewer: you can ask people to come to
[00:12:43] Gordon Brewer: your website and
[00:12:44] Gordon Brewer: you can hope that maybe they will. But if you have a lead magnet,
[00:12:49] Gordon Brewer: which is just simply maybe a PDF about a
[00:12:52] Gordon Brewer: specific um. you know,
[00:12:54] Gordon Brewer: maybe a specific skill or, uh, nine ways to help your
[00:12:58] Gordon Brewer: depression, or nine ways
[00:12:59] Gordon Brewer: to whatever, you know, and
[00:13:02] Gordon Brewer: you
[00:13:02] Gordon Brewer: have like a PDF that people can, can download
[00:13:06] Gordon Brewer: in order for them to get the download
[00:13:08] Gordon Brewer: they're gonna exchange with you, your e their email.
[00:13:11] Gordon Brewer: Uh, address. And then email marketing
[00:13:16] Gordon Brewer: is one of the most powerful
[00:13:18] Gordon Brewer: ways
[00:13:19] Gordon Brewer: to, um, get people to buy your
[00:13:22] Gordon Brewer: stuff. Um, and in that you can put that in front of people numbers, uh, numerous times during a week or
[00:13:29] Gordon Brewer: a month. Of course, you don't wanna.
[00:13:31] Gordon Brewer: Spam people or
[00:13:32] Gordon Brewer: whatever, but, um, it's
[00:13:34] Gordon Brewer: not, you know, you hear different things, but you know, you hear that for
[00:13:39] Gordon Brewer: somebody to
[00:13:39] Gordon Brewer: convert, which just means they buy something or they sign up for your services or they become a client, that kind of thing. um,
[00:13:47] Gordon Brewer: you get
[00:13:48] Gordon Brewer: different things, but there has to be
[00:13:50] Gordon Brewer: at least eight touchpoints before they
[00:13:52] Gordon Brewer: decide. And so email is a
[00:13:55] Gordon Brewer: good way to make those touchpoints. In other words, you're, Hey, have you thought about counseling for yourself? Or, Hey, are
[00:14:01] Gordon Brewer: you struggling with this particular issue or this, this sort of
[00:14:05] Gordon Brewer: thing.
[00:14:05] Gordon Brewer: I can help you and this is how You can sign up
[00:14:08] Gordon Brewer: to become a. A client or that sort of thing.
[00:14:11] Gordon Brewer: And the same thing
[00:14:12] Gordon Brewer: too, just on, you know, kind of
[00:14:14] Gordon Brewer: the, um, I know
[00:14:16] Gordon Brewer: for me with the practice of therapy, the
[00:14:18] Gordon Brewer: consulting side of things, that's what I use.
[00:14:20] Gordon Brewer: And so leading magnets can be any number of things.
[00:14:24] Gordon Brewer: Uh, PDFs are usually,
[00:14:26] Gordon Brewer: um, a good, good thing.
[00:14:28] Gordon Brewer: Also giving them access to, uh,
[00:14:31] Gordon Brewer: special videos or that kind of thing where they, uh, give you their email.
[00:14:36] Gordon Brewer: Yeah. . Yeah, it's a good lead
[00:14:38] Gordon Brewer: magnet. Um, even webinars are, you know, you know,
[00:14:41] Gordon Brewer: to sign up for this webinar, which
[00:14:43] Gordon Brewer: that's how most of them work, is that you have to give them
[00:14:46] Gordon Brewer: your email address in order to get the link.
[00:14:49] Gordon Brewer: And so those are, those are ways to do
[00:14:51] Gordon Brewer: that. And then PDF
[00:14:52] Gordon Brewer: sheets where, Um,
[00:14:53] Gordon Brewer: so for example, with the practice of therapy, I've got a private practice startup guide, which is, uh, is pretty content rich. And uh, the other thing I would say about lead magnets is give away your best stuff,
[00:15:07] Gordon Brewer: um, because that, again, qualifies you to, um,
[00:15:13] Gordon Brewer: to be no, like, no,
[00:15:15] Gordon Brewer: known,
[00:15:15] Gordon Brewer: liked, and trusted.
[00:15:16] Gordon Brewer: So,
[00:15:17] James Marland: you're dropping a lot of, uh, a lot of
[00:15:19] James Marland: knowledge bombs here
[00:15:21] Gordon Brewer: Mm-Hmm.
[00:15:22] James Marland: Like all, a
[00:15:23] James Marland: lot of what you just said is like what I've read
[00:15:25] James Marland: and listened to, uh, to in hours of content,
[00:15:30] James Marland: but you just kind of distilled it
[00:15:31] James Marland: into two minutes there.
[00:15:34] James Marland: So they're lead magnets, very powerful. Um. the next episode was on, uh, uh, serving a Niche, ,and we had
[00:15:44] James Marland: Ira Hayes, uh, as a guest.
[00:15:47] James Marland: Guest host there with us today, and
[00:15:50] James Marland: our download of
[00:15:52] James Marland: the episode was The Pumpkin
[00:15:54] James Marland: Plan. It was a summary, so
[00:15:56] James Marland: I, I, I've like, listened. I love Audible
[00:15:59] James Marland: and I,
[00:15:59] James Marland: think I've listened to the pumpkin plan like five times just to try to like, understand niches And
[00:16:04] James Marland: how to do it. And so I, I have a, a summary of the pumpkin plan, just like
[00:16:09] James Marland: 12, I think it's 12 chapters with 12 things about the pumpkin plan.
[00:16:13] Gordon Brewer: Right.
[00:16:14] James Marland: there's
[00:16:14] James Marland: power. The main
[00:16:15] James Marland: e the main, uh,
[00:16:18] James Marland: focus of that episode was the power of spec specialization, Um, and how that helps you your ideal client. Uh, so,
[00:16:29] James Marland: uh, have you read
[00:16:30] James Marland: the pumpkin plan? I'm sure you know about
[00:16:32] Gordon Brewer: I, yeah, yeah,
[00:16:33] Gordon Brewer: I know. Yeah. You're referring to Mike Mcow, it's book, the Pumpkin
[00:16:37] Gordon Brewer: Plan and, um, no, I haven't read
[00:16:39] Gordon Brewer: it. Well, I'm ashamed to say that, but it's on my, it's on my reading list, my audible list. so,
[00:16:45] James Marland: you do
[00:16:45] James Marland: audible too.
[00:16:46] Gordon Brewer: uh, yeah, yeah, I do, that's how I read anymore. But, um,
[00:16:49] Gordon Brewer: yeah. But, uh, you know, the, one, uh, you know, maybe a, a story, a little bit of a story about niches
[00:16:55] Gordon Brewer: to think about Is, uh, and this goes back to SEO, Um,
[00:17:01] Gordon Brewer: you, when people are wanting help with,
[00:17:03] Gordon Brewer: a problem, they're gonna present you
[00:17:05] Gordon Brewer: with,
[00:17:05] Gordon Brewer: a specific problem.
[00:17:07] Gordon Brewer: And so they want to know that you're an expert
[00:17:09] Gordon Brewer: in that particular problem. But the, the fear that people have about
[00:17:13] Gordon Brewer: niching down is, is that they feel like they're not
[00:17:16] Gordon Brewer: gonna cast a broad enough net.
[00:17:20] Gordon Brewer: And that they're gonna miss, miss getting, um, clients, or
[00:17:23] Gordon Brewer: there's gonna be people that are not, you know, they they wanna be everyone
[00:17:28] Gordon Brewer: to, you know, be all
[00:17:29] Gordon Brewer: to everyone.
[00:17:30] Gordon Brewer: and um, a a story about that is, is that, um, I've got
[00:17:36] Gordon Brewer: a good friend of mine and, he's a cardiologist,
[00:17:39] Gordon Brewer: and, um,
[00:17:41] Gordon Brewer: you know, I wouldn't necessarily go to
[00:17:44] Gordon Brewer: Keith.
[00:17:46] Gordon Brewer: if I had a broken
[00:17:47] Gordon Brewer: leg, um, since
[00:17:49] Gordon Brewer: he's a cardiologist, so that's an example. But
[00:17:53] Gordon Brewer: if I had a broken leg and wanted to
[00:17:55] Gordon Brewer: get some
[00:17:56] Gordon Brewer: advice about what to do about
[00:17:58] Gordon Brewer: that,
[00:17:59] Gordon Brewer: I could talk to him because I know he's got medical training. I know that he's
[00:18:02] Gordon Brewer: could refer me to somebody else
[00:18:05] Gordon Brewer: or get me in in the right place
[00:18:08] Gordon Brewer: to take care of that particular issue.
[00:18:11] Gordon Brewer: So a good way to think about niches is, is
[00:18:14] Gordon Brewer: that, um, people are gonna look for specific
[00:18:18] Gordon Brewer: help with specific problems and, Um,
[00:18:22] Gordon Brewer: yeah. And so that, that's
[00:18:24] Gordon Brewer: a, that's a way to, to think about it.
[00:18:26] Gordon Brewer: So by not niching your prac, you're, um,
[00:18:31] Gordon Brewer: you're, you're gonna cast too broad of a net and not catch
[00:18:35] Gordon Brewer: as many fish.
[00:18:37] James Marland: I bet being specialized as a heart doctor, a cardiologist, he can he's, he's sought out
[00:18:43] James Marland: for that service
[00:18:45] Gordon Brewer: Mm-Hmm.
[00:18:46] James Marland: he can probably charge more
[00:18:48] Gordon Brewer: Yes. Yes.
[00:18:49] Gordon Brewer: Uhhuh.
[00:18:50] James Marland: in that area.
[00:18:51] Gordon Brewer: He's a Specialist.
[00:18:52] Gordon Brewer: Yeah. And
[00:18:53] Gordon Brewer: that's a that's another good, good point. Um,
[00:18:56] Gordon Brewer: I know, um, for, particularly for, um, uh,
[00:19:01] Gordon Brewer: practices that are insurance based, um, .Having
[00:19:05] Gordon Brewer: a specialty gives you a lot of
[00:19:07] Gordon Brewer: leverage in negotiating your contract rates with insurance
[00:19:10] Gordon Brewer: companies, um, and that you can justify that.
[00:19:13] Gordon Brewer: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:19:15] James Marland: uh, there were two episodes on conferences, uh, episode
[00:19:18] James Marland: 45, marketing Your Mental Health
[00:19:21] James Marland: Services by Conference Attendance. And then episode 48 I did a, uh, like a reaction show, marketing your
[00:19:27] James Marland: therapy services, uh, networking at conferences. the two downloads was download the conference connection
[00:19:34] James Marland: worksheet.
[00:19:35] James Marland: So I just put together some tools like.
[00:19:38] James Marland: Getting people's names and emails and
[00:19:40] James Marland: addresses
[00:19:40] James Marland: and then an action plan afterwards. Like, What are you gonna do
[00:19:44] James Marland: What are you gonna do afterwards? And how do
[00:19:46] James Marland: you do it? And then, um, then,
[00:19:50] James Marland: uh, I made it a game. So I don't know about you, but I like
[00:19:55] James Marland: games. So I made it. like Hey, give yourself a point if you do this activity, you know,
[00:19:59] James Marland: ask somebody to lunch or give yourself a point if you, uh, get somebody's email and you know,
[00:20:06] James Marland: actually email them and then 'cause we're constantly
[00:20:09] James Marland: going to conferences. You can, in conference one,
[00:20:12] James Marland: let's say You got 15 points. And so you challenge yourself to get out there
[00:20:16] James Marland: and do more in conference two. So it's a little
[00:20:18] James Marland: game.
[00:20:19] James Marland: It, it might
[00:20:20] James Marland: work for some people, but I love games for things. Um, we, in those conferences, we,
[00:20:25] James Marland: we really talked about the power of networking
[00:20:27] James Marland: and how some of your best friends.
[00:20:30] James Marland: Come from these episodes. I
[00:20:31] James Marland: mean,
[00:20:32] James Marland: that's, I've said it before, but that's how I met Gordon and how
[00:20:36] James Marland: he's been such a great blessing to me in my journey. And then
[00:20:39] James Marland: he's introduced me to other people, uh, Whitney and Dawn,
[00:20:43] James Marland: and, you know,
[00:20:44] James Marland: just, uh, Lisa and Steve, even Steve, like all these people that I've gone to conferences with or known, gotten to know
[00:20:50] James Marland: them through those, um, the, the main,
[00:20:55] James Marland: the main headings were, uh,
[00:20:57] James Marland: or the
[00:20:57] James Marland: main topics. Was getting the
[00:20:59] James Marland: most out of
[00:21:00] James Marland: your conference. 'cause you want ROI.
[00:21:02] James Marland: 'cause these conferences are not cheap.
[00:21:04] James Marland: You know, going to them can sometimes be a big
[00:21:07] James Marland: expense
[00:21:07] James Marland: and time. And if you
[00:21:08] James Marland: go for three days, you're not, you know, you're not earning any money those three days. So, you know, you gotta really think about that.
[00:21:14] James Marland: And then we had tips for introverts because
[00:21:18] James Marland: all of us kind of identify as being slightly introverted. So. Even just asking somebody to lunch or sitting next to people or
[00:21:27] James Marland: giving out your email, you know, you need to do it, but it, it can be difficult. So, um,
[00:21:35] James Marland: Gordon, what are some
[00:21:36] James Marland: of your tips for, uh, getting the most out of, out of conferences and maybe networking out, out at a conference?
[00:21:43] Gordon Brewer: Yeah. So, um, yeah, so
[00:21:46] Gordon Brewer: I think, um, you know, when I think of conferences,
[00:21:48] Gordon Brewer: I
[00:21:48] Gordon Brewer: think of community.
[00:21:49] Gordon Brewer: And like you, like you said, is, um,
[00:21:53] Gordon Brewer: I've le, I've met
[00:21:54] Gordon Brewer: some of my
[00:21:55] Gordon Brewer: closest friends
[00:21:56] Gordon Brewer: in this whole therapy space through conferences and
[00:22:00] Gordon Brewer: through those connections. And, um,
[00:22:03] Gordon Brewer: I think one of the things,
[00:22:05] Gordon Brewer: um, you know, as therapists,
[00:22:07] Gordon Brewer: you know, one of the things that we do is we, um.
[00:22:11] Gordon Brewer: we have to get to know people pretty
[00:22:13] Gordon Brewer: quickly in the therapy room. And so it's really no different than that,
[00:22:17] Gordon Brewer: at conferences of, um,
[00:22:19] Gordon Brewer: you know, uh, just thinking about just getting curious with people
[00:22:23] Gordon Brewer: and just interacting with people and usually
[00:22:28] Gordon Brewer: Nearly always when I go to
[00:22:30] Gordon Brewer: a conference, I, get some sort of nugget. I might not get an ROI
[00:22:36] Gordon Brewer: directly, but in some ways
[00:22:38] Gordon Brewer: or form or fashion, I might get an ROI
[00:22:41] Gordon Brewer: later.
[00:22:41] Gordon Brewer: Um,
[00:22:42] Gordon Brewer: I. You know, it's just kinda like,
[00:22:44] Gordon Brewer: uh, as you mentioned, James, you And I
[00:22:46] Gordon Brewer: met in, I believe it was 2019,
[00:22:50] Gordon Brewer: um, at the conference
[00:22:51] Gordon Brewer: in Ista Park,
[00:22:52] Gordon Brewer: Colorado. And, um,
[00:22:55] Gordon Brewer: little did I know I would be working with James in this
[00:22:58] Gordon Brewer: capacity.
[00:22:59] Gordon Brewer: Uh, you know, at that time
[00:23:00] Gordon Brewer: it wasn't even on the radar.
[00:23:02] Gordon Brewer: And so you form those connections and you, you build those relationships and you, you you,
[00:23:08] Gordon Brewer: just find out other
[00:23:08] Gordon Brewer: people's stories and so .I would say a
[00:23:11] Gordon Brewer: tip for going to
[00:23:12] Gordon Brewer: conferences
[00:23:13] Gordon Brewer: is the people that you
[00:23:14] Gordon Brewer: meet get curious about 'em. So, you know, tell me
[00:23:17] Gordon Brewer: where you're from.
[00:23:18] Gordon Brewer: Tell me
[00:23:18] Gordon Brewer: about your practice. Tell me about what you do You know, tell me where you live,
[00:23:22] Gordon Brewer: you know, all of
[00:23:23] Gordon Brewer: those kinds of things of just getting curious with people in a genuine way.
[00:23:30] James Marland: Um, I, at at a,
[00:23:32] James Marland: at one of those conferences, um, I was at a table, I think it was by myself, and my wife was there, and,
[00:23:42] James Marland: I. We happened to, I didn't really know anybody.
[00:23:45] James Marland: Uh, and, uh, Daniel Fava came over and I didn't know Daniel at the time,
[00:23:50] James Marland: and we kind of laughed about how we're both kind of introverted and we connected on that way. and,
[00:23:55] James Marland: now he's been a great, you know,
[00:23:57] James Marland: friend and
[00:23:57] James Marland: support and um, it's just, uh, getting, getting out there and,
[00:24:04] James Marland: talking to
[00:24:05] James Marland: people and,
[00:24:08] James Marland: uh. Most, I think I think most people share some of those
[00:24:13] James Marland: insecurities.
[00:24:15] Gordon Brewer: Mm-Hmm.
[00:24:15] James Marland: you, not everybody is those extra extroverts. So
[00:24:18] Gordon Brewer: Mm-Hmm.
[00:24:19] James Marland: there, there are a lot of
[00:24:20] James Marland: introverts out there who would, who would love to take a selfie with you.
[00:24:24] James Marland: You know, like,
[00:24:24] Gordon Brewer: Yeah. Right.
[00:24:26] Gordon Brewer: Yeah. Well, I think one tr you know, there's a,
[00:24:29] Gordon Brewer: uh, speaking of an introverts and maybe a little tangent to go on here, um, there's a, there's a book,
[00:24:37] Gordon Brewer: oh, shoot. And I'm gonna draw a blank here. My brain's been in a fog
[00:24:41] Gordon Brewer: lately, but,
[00:24:41] Gordon Brewer: um,
[00:24:42] Gordon Brewer: it's called, um,
[00:24:45] Gordon Brewer: Oh, shoot, I'll think of it in a minute, But
[00:24:47] Gordon Brewer: it's a book about being
[00:24:49] Gordon Brewer: an introvert and, um, one, it's by Susan Kane and it is,
[00:24:56] Gordon Brewer: let me think
[00:24:57] Gordon Brewer: here. I'll think I'll,
[00:24:59] Gordon Brewer: I'll, I'll put this in,
[00:25:00] Gordon Brewer: I'll my
[00:25:02] Gordon Brewer: handy dandy app machine as I like to call it. Um,
[00:25:09] Gordon Brewer: And, uh, pull up that book.
[00:25:11] Gordon Brewer: Um,
[00:25:12] Gordon Brewer: quiet, that's the name of the
[00:25:14] Gordon Brewer: book. I couldn't think of that. So, but one, one of the things that, um, and, and for anybody
[00:25:19] Gordon Brewer: that's an introvert, I would say read
[00:25:21] Gordon Brewer: that book Because
[00:25:23] Gordon Brewer: I'm basically wired as an introvert. I'm really more of an,
[00:25:27] Gordon Brewer: what they call an ambi
[00:25:28] Gordon Brewer: avert.
[00:25:29] Gordon Brewer: Depending on the situations, I can be more extroverted or I Like, to think of myself,
[00:25:34] Gordon Brewer: um, as an
[00:25:35] Gordon Brewer: introvert with
[00:25:36] Gordon Brewer: high social skills. So,
[00:25:38] Gordon Brewer: um,
[00:25:39] Gordon Brewer: So, but one of the things that I think to give yourself permission
[00:25:43] Gordon Brewer: to do
[00:25:44] Gordon Brewer: if you are an introvert
[00:25:45] Gordon Brewer: is just to allow yourself to observe.
[00:25:49] Gordon Brewer: And one of the thing
[00:25:50] Gordon Brewer: about introverts is that a lot of times,
[00:25:52] Gordon Brewer: and they've done
[00:25:53] Gordon Brewer: kind of, did some studies on this.
[00:25:55] Gordon Brewer: An
[00:25:56] Gordon Brewer: introvert in a room
[00:25:57] Gordon Brewer: of people and
[00:25:58] Gordon Brewer: they're just
[00:25:58] Gordon Brewer: observing and listening to what other people are
[00:26:01] Gordon Brewer: saying. Feel like they are
[00:26:04] Gordon Brewer: involved in that sense, or giving yourself to feel that And be
[00:26:09] Gordon Brewer: involved. And so you
[00:26:10] Gordon Brewer: don't necessarily have to drive the
[00:26:11] Gordon Brewer: conversation. You
[00:26:12] Gordon Brewer: don't have to be the one that.
[00:26:14] Gordon Brewer: goes up and introduces
[00:26:16] Gordon Brewer: yourself or that sort of thing, but you just um,
[00:26:20] Gordon Brewer: Simply just let
[00:26:22] Gordon Brewer: yourself be present,
[00:26:24] Gordon Brewer: listen, learn,
[00:26:25] Gordon Brewer: and I think that you can get just as much
[00:26:28] Gordon Brewer: out of that a lot of times.
