And now, without further ado, welcome to the Scaling Therapy Practice, the show where we empower mission-driven leaders and helpers to launch life-changing online courses. Today, we're diving into the importance of a well-crafted webpage for your business. Almost all my knowledge about webpages comes from Donald Miller's StoryBrand and his Marketing Made Simple podcast, which I highly recommend.
The Importance of a Website
In today's digital age, having a website is essential. Whether you're launching an online business or adding an online component to your existing business, a website helps you attract and keep customers, build your brand, and communicate effectively. However, if your website isn't effective, it might be because it's confusing. Remember, as Donald Miller says, "If you confuse, you lose."
Common Website Mistakes
One common mistake is overloading visitors with too much information. Think about your own browsing habits—how often do you read long paragraphs of text on a website? Most of us skim through the headlines and images to find what we need. So, keep your website clear and concise.
Another mistake is not having a clear call to action (CTA). Your visitors should know exactly what to do next. Whether it's signing up for a newsletter, scheduling a discovery call, or purchasing a product, make your CTA stand out.
Lastly, avoid using industry jargon or clever phrases that might confuse your visitors. Clarity trumps cleverness every time.
Essential Website Sections
According to StoryBrand, there are eight essential sections your website should have:
- Header: Clearly state what you do, how it benefits the customer, and what action they should take.
- Stakes: Address the pain points your customers have.
- Value Proposition: Highlight the benefits of your product or service.
- Guide Section: Introduce your brand with empathy and authority.
- Plan Section: Outline the steps the customer needs to take to solve their problem.
- Explanation Paragraph: Offer more details about what you do and include SEO keywords.
- Optional Sections: Include videos, pricing information, and a junk drawer for miscellaneous details.
Practical Steps for Improvement
Simplify and clarify your website to ensure it passes the "grunt test." Use strong calls to action and continually update your website based on feedback. Look at your header—does it clearly articulate what you do? Use a clear and straightforward tagline rather than something clever.
For example, if you offer tax preparation services, your header could say, "Save Time and Money with Expert Tax Preparation Services." This is clear and highlights the benefit to the customer.
Get Professional Help
Instead of trying to do everything yourself, consider hiring professionals to help with your website. I recommend StoryBrand guides, Daniel Fava from Private Practice Elevation, Jessica Tapana from Simplified SEO Consultants, and the team at ClearBrand. These professionals can help you create an effective and engaging website.
Upcoming Courses and Challenges
I'm excited to announce a few upcoming courses and challenges. First, there's a mini-course on mindset coming soon. This course will help you overcome negative thoughts and build the confidence you need to create and launch your online course.
