It was an honor to sit down with Henry B. Dotson III—a man who transformed his battle with multiple myeloma, which is a cancer of the plasma cells, into a mission to help others facing similar challenges. Diagnosed in 2015, Henry’s journey is a testament to faith, resilience, and a profound sense of purpose. In our conversation, he shared insights that can inspire anyone looking to turn their own life experiences into something meaningful, like an online course. So, let's dive into some powerful lessons Henry’s story offers to mission-driven creators.

Embrace Your Journey: Why Your Story Matters

When we go through life-changing experiences, it can be hard to see the broader impact those experiences might have on others. Henry didn’t initially set out to be a “Christian cancer coach.” He just knew he wanted to share his story and trust that God would take care of the rest. As he put it, “I just knew that my job was to make the offer and it will turn out the way it's going to turn out.”

Creating an online course often begins the same way—by simply sharing what you know and trusting the process. Whether you’re a therapist, social worker, or teacher, your story and expertise are valuable. A course that shares your journey can give others hope and a path forward.

Building Resilience and Courage

Henry faced his diagnosis with peace—a peace that he says came from knowing he had faith and friends to support him. Even with an uncertain prognosis, he found comfort and strength in his spiritual foundation. His advice on worry resonates with many of us: “If you’re going to pray, then why worry? But if you’re going to worry, then why pray?”

This advice holds true for aspiring course creators, too. It’s easy to let fear and doubt take over. Worrying about whether your course will succeed can rob you of the courage you need to take that first step. Instead, focus on your mission, take things one step at a time, and trust that your story will resonate.

Helping Others Find Strength in Their Own Journey

Henry didn’t just want to share his story; he wanted to create something that could help others. As he explained, “This journey was not just about me and it wasn't just about my wife. It was about everyone who became involved.” His Facebook group, where people prayed and offered support, became a source of strength not only for him but for everyone who participated.

This is a great reminder for anyone creating an online course—it's not just about the content, but the community. Think about how you can create a supportive space where your students can share their experiences, learn from one another, and grow. When you provide a platform for others to connect and learn, your course becomes more than just a source of passive income; it becomes a place of transformation.

Trusting in the Mission

One thing that stood out about Henry was his unwavering sense of mission. He wasn’t doing this work to make a name for himself; he genuinely wanted to serve others. “I'm just going to do what you tell me to do and the chips will fall where they may,” he said about stepping out in faith to share his story.

In course creation, mission-driven work means centering your purpose above all else. It’s about helping people and making an impact, not just about earning passive income. When you’re mission-driven, your course will naturally attract the people who need it most.

Cultivating Community and Connection

Throughout Henry’s journey, he continually found ways to connect with others—even when he was in the hospital. He recalls, “Whenever anybody came in the room, whether they were the doctor, a nurse, or even the person who came to clear out my trash, I would engage them in a conversation.” His interactions weren’t just about his needs but about bringing comfort to others.

This is a powerful approach for course creators. Don’t just think of your audience as students or customers; think of them as people you can connect with. By building genuine relationships, you create a community that supports each other and grows together.

Setting Goals and Seeing Your Course as a Journey

Henry’s approach to coaching cancer patients involves setting clear goals and recognizing each individual’s unique journey. For example, he does an assessment at the start, halfway through, and at the end of his three-month program to track spiritual progress.

For online course creators, this is a reminder to structure your courses in a way that supports your students’ growth. Encourage them to set small goals and celebrate milestones along the way. When students see progress, they’re more likely to stay motivated and engaged. A structured course that offers guidance and achievable steps can make all the difference.

Concluding Thoughts: The Power of Faith and Focus

As we wrapped up, Henry reminded me of something that has stayed with me: “All he asks of us is just to give what you have and do what you can.” This is true for anyone starting a side hustle or creating a course—give what you have, stay focused, and trust that your work will have an impact.

Creating an online course isn’t just about sharing knowledge; it’s about walking with others on a path of growth and transformation. When you build your course around a mission, you give people the tools they need to overcome their own challenges and find their own purpose. And in the end, that’s what being a course creator is all about.
