Conquer Your Course Recording Fears: Proven Tips for Confidence
Aug 19, 2024How to Take the Fear Out of Recording Your Online Course
Hello and welcome to the Scaling Therapy Practice! I'm James Marland, and today, we’re diving into a topic that many course creators find daunting: recording your online course. If the thought of hitting that record button makes your heart race, you're not alone. But don’t worry, because by the end of this post, you’ll have some practical tips to help you conquer that fear and record with confidence.
Tip #1: Embrace the Learning Curve
Here’s the big tip: Your first recording won’t be perfect, and that’s okay. In fact, it’s likely going to be the worst one you do. Speaking on camera, following your notes, and getting everything just right is a skill that takes time to develop. The important thing is to get started. Remember, every expert was once a beginner. Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. Just focus on doing the work, putting in the reps, and you’ll see improvement over time. The key to success is persistence, not perfection.
Tip #2: Record in Chunks
Recording in smaller segments can make the process more manageable. If you have an hour-long course, break it down into 10-15 minute sections. Focus on getting each segment just right before moving on. It’s much easier to stitch together a few great segments than to try to edit one long, mistake-filled recording. Plus, this approach helps keep your energy and focus sharp, making for a more engaging final product.
Tip #3: Choose Your Recording Method
When it comes to recording, you have a few options:
- Talking Head: This is where you’re front and center, speaking directly to the camera. It’s a great way to build a personal connection with your audience.
- Voiceover Slides: If your course is more about the content than your on-screen presence, this method allows you to narrate while your slides are displayed.
- Combination: This mixes both methods, allowing you to appear on screen while also showing slides or other visual aids.
Choose the method that best suits your content and makes you feel most comfortable.
Tip #4: Invest in Good Audio Equipment
Good audio is crucial. It’s better to have great sound with okay visuals than the other way around. Invest in an external microphone rather than relying on your computer’s built-in mic. A simple USB mic like the Blue Yeti can make a world of difference. Also, pay attention to your recording environment. Minimize background noise, close windows and doors, and consider adding sound-absorbing materials to your space.
Tip #5: Use Tools You’re Comfortable With
Choose a recording tool that you know how to use and that won’t add unnecessary complexity. Whether it’s a simple setup like Zoom or a more advanced tool like Descript, the best choice is the one that allows you to record easily and efficiently. Remember, it’s about getting the job done, not having the fanciest equipment or software.
Tip #6: Do a Test Run when Recording Your Course
Before you dive into a full recording session, do a quick test. Make sure your audio is clear, your lighting is good, and everything is working as it should. This small step can save you a lot of frustration down the line.
Final Thoughts
Recording your online course doesn’t have to be a scary experience. By starting with realistic expectations, breaking down the process, and using the right tools, you can create content that you’re proud of—and that helps others. Remember, the first step is always the hardest, but it’s also the most important. So go ahead, hit that record button, and put your mission in motion.
