How I Learned to Embrace Mistakes and Pivot
Jan 10, 2025Celebrating 100 Episodes of the Scaling Therapy Practice Podcast
Wow, what a journey it’s been! Reaching the 100th episode milestone has given me a chance to reflect on the mistakes I’ve made, the lessons I’ve learned, and how I’m pivoting for the future. Podcasting isn’t easy—it takes hours of planning, recording, editing, and promoting—but it’s also been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done.
This episode is about being honest with yourself, learning to embrace mistakes, and giving yourself permission to grow. Inspired by Adam Grant’s book Think Again, I’m rethinking old assumptions and facing some hard truths about my podcast, my brand, and my mission.
Mistake #1: The Name No Longer Fits
When I started this podcast, the name Scaling Therapy Practice made sense. My cohost, David Hall, and I divided the workload: he brought insights from managing a therapy practice, and I focused on backend systems like hiring and virtual assistants. Together, we helped therapists scale their practices.
But things changed. David left, and my focus shifted to helping therapists create online educational products. Over time, the name started to feel like a mismatch. It suggests I offer tips on running therapy offices—workflows, staff management, finances—but that’s no longer my expertise.
I’ve held onto the name out of habit and fear of breaking SEO links. But as I reflect, I realize this has likely limited my reach. The longer I stick with a name that doesn’t reflect my mission, the harder it is for me to connect with the therapists I truly want to serve.
Lesson Learned:
Names matter. Authenticity matters. It’s time to align the name of the podcast with the message I’m passionate about: helping therapists increase their impact, influence, and income through online educational products.
Mistake #2: Misaligned Marketing
When I started marketing my courses and programs, I focused on solving pain points like burnout, time constraints, and financial stress. My messaging was all about achieving freedom through scalable income.
That’s not wrong—those are real struggles, and my products can help. But deep down, that message doesn’t light me up. What energizes me is helping therapists who are irrationally passionate about their work. These are the people who dream of reaching underserved populations, creating transformative resources, and becoming go-to specialists in their field.
My current marketing speaks to therapists who want to avoid pain, but I want to inspire those who are motivated by passion.
Lesson Learned:
I need to choose a side. My future branding and messaging will focus on helping therapists make an impact and influence lives. Income will follow as a result, but it’s not the driving force.
What’s Next for the Podcast and Beyond
1. Rebranding for Authenticity
I’m toying with ideas for a name change that better reflects my mission. Words like "shine" or "light" come to mind because I want to help therapists let their light shine in the world.
2. Fewer Interviews, More Solo Episodes
While I enjoy interviews, I want to create more solo episodes focused on actionable advice for course creation and scaling impact. I’m also planning coaching episodes where I help listeners solve specific problems in real-time.
3. Expanded Resources and Connections
In 2025, I’ll offer more webinars and resources to help therapists break through bottlenecks. I also want to bring in experts to share their unique knowledge with my audience.
The Big Takeaway
It’s okay to admit when something isn’t working. It’s okay to rethink, pivot, and grow. Mistakes aren’t failures—they’re opportunities to realign with your authentic self.
For me, that means shifting my focus to therapists who are driven by a mission to help others. I want to support those who refuse to let their dreams die, who just need a little guidance and encouragement to bring their ideas to life.
